Dream meaning: Bridge

Bridge Going under a bridge suggests delving into unconscious material; a need or fear of dealing with instinctual material. Crossing a bridge over water may be a way to avoid unconscious material or may symbolize using the intellect to arrive at a decision or behavior; sexual intercourse. A bridge can symbolize a need or willingness to: overcome obstacles; make a connection between one point or idea and another; make a transition between two conditions in your life (unite the past and present).

It can symbolize a crossroads or a decision you need to make. A collapsing bridge may represent repressed feelings, or can indicate that your psyche took some incident more seriously than you did consciously.

Consider how easy or difficult it is to cross the bridge and its condition (rocky or stable, small or narrow). Are you closing off alternatives you may need in the future (burning bridges behind you). Or are you avoiding a decision, waiting to cross a bridge.

A rainbow is a common symbol for bridging heaven and earth. Since a dream itself is a bridge between the conscious and unconscious, a bridge, or activity on the bridge, may symbolize your dreaming or dreamwork process.

In my dream, I switched scenarios and places many times. Although I switched so much, I always ended up on a wooden bridge. All of these bridges went over an ocean and all of these bridges were missing numerous boards. I was always passenger in the car and we would come close to the edge of the bridges and I would get scared and then we would get back on. This same scenario occurred in the same dream 3-5 times in one night. For the least one, we had been on a wooden bridge almost like a roller coaster with the way it twisted and turned. It went all the way up and once we reached the top, there wasn’t anymore board so the car went flying through the air and as we’re were about to hit the water (with ice sticking out), I woke up.

Also, just a side note, in my dream I specifically remember googling what dreams meant that you would drive on wooden bridges with missing boards so I decided to google it.

In my dreams i saw the 2 bridges. One was concrete and the other one was wooden. But the concrete is new. I felt it might fall down or something. Then i chose the wooden instead. Then I started to run to the bridge instead of walking without scary feelings. Then in the middle of the bridge i saw a man trying to stop me, but i ignored him until i reached the other side..But it made me confused. I saw myself passing that bridge for about 3 times. I keep coming back to the other side and go back to the next side again.

I had a dream that I was on a tall cliff, but I had to cross a really long bridge (kind of like in Shrek 1) over a large ocean. I remember sometimes stumbling and seeing the waves over a hundred feet below me..I have a huge fear of heights and I remember being in absolute panic mode

  • Liv // Aug 8, 2013 at 10:43 pm

I used to live on an island accessible by a long high bridge (not a dream). I also am nervous about heights but after living on the island for many years I lost my fear of driving over it- though heights can still scare me. My recurring dream is that I must walk over this bridge -sometimes by myself sometimes with someone. The bridge is very steep and often in bad repair with the part that I must first get on actually under water (sometimes there is snow on the bridge too). The part I am walking on is like a railroad trestle where I can see through the boards. The whole time I am walking I am scared and I often stumble. Sometimes it becomes so steep (or I become so scared) that I have to crawl across the trestles. I am usually crossing the bridge because someone (usually some vague person from my past) has told me I need to but never really tells me why. I never actually finish crossing the bridge in the dream and I don’t fall off it either. Any ideas? I have this dream every couple of weeks.

I had a dream of a square covered turnaround bridge built out over a lake or large body of water. I was very busy tidying up this bridge and putting all the baby cats in a safe corner. To me it was a beautiful bridge and I was sure it was put there so people could turn around. What the meaning of what this is, I have no idea.

  • Roller coaster bridges // Mar 14, 2013 at 5:52 am

I always have dreams about going over very, very high bridges, usually passing over an ocean. The bridges are sometimes as high as airplanes travel and usually they are very twisty and are almost like roller coasters. I sometimes have a very difficult time crossing it (I am always driving), like the car is stuck in mud and can barely move, and other times I’m driving so fast the car is almost careening out of control. I always see the end of the bridge, but a lot of times don’t get to the other side. I wake up before I get there. Oddly, I rarely feel scared even when the bridge is so high and has such crazy drops and I’m driving really fast. A lot of times I feel exhilarated by it, just frustrated that I don’t always make it to the other side.

I had a dream that I was with my friends and we were riding a car. I was in the front seat. Then we wanted to cross a very large bridge, but it was blocked with traffic. A lot of people were trying to cross, but it was really hard to cross. I woke up without crossing the bridge in my dream.

  • alyssa // Dec 16, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I had this dream that I was in the passenger seat with my mom and my baby brother in the car. We were on a freeway and had a choice of two bridges to go on and my mom drove to the one on the leftside, kind of below the other on. Well we were driving and noticed no one else was on this bridge, well I looked ahead and noticed the bridge didn’t keep going like if it ended or if it was going to be finished built but we drove off and I just looked at my mom and my baby brother and I started panicking. However that’s when I woke up so I don’t know if we died or something? I didn’t even get to see what we fell on. Why couldn’t I see the ending?

Hi. Posting dream similar to what Andrew posted back in July 2012. I have recurring tall bridge dreams too. I’m in slightly congested city area and the bridge in question is not just extreme in height, it has all these weird loops around it. Now many large metro cities have these setups, but the bridge doesn’t cross water or rivers or railroad tracks. There are several entrance and exit ramps, but not going in the obvious directions, and they all loop continually around each other, like I can never get off! And the scene changes before I can see straight I’m in a rural area passing fruit orchards out to a long dusty road, winding thru hills. Then I feel peaceful. Good to know others share my bridge dreams, I don’t feel alone in this 🙂

  • Rebecca // Oct 14, 2012 at 3:51 pm

There is a concrete bridge (shaped like the McDonald’s M on the underside) passing over two lanes with a grassy median. I am on the right side just below the bridge. I see two people walking among grass/meadow on the opposite side (on the left, and on the other side of the bridge). I see their backsides, but they appear to be having a good time. I tell my self (keeping it spelled that way on purpose) I need to go under the bridge to get to the other side. It ends after I pass underneath, which I don’t see myself going under, but happen to pass under.

I come out onto the big wooden wrap around porch look to the east and the river is up over the swinging bridge. There are dark gangster cars on the other side of the river and men standing next to the cars. The out house is on the other side, I have to pee but I know the icy water will make me go before I get across the water.

  • Chelsea // Jul 26, 2012 at 1:04 pm

The dream started with my car on the a huge freeway bridge with bad stopped traffic, at night in the rain. My car was about 1/4 the way onto the bridge and there was a semi truck parked in line in front of me. Semi trucks make me uncomfortable so I backed up a car space. And then the place where I was parked and everything past that collapsed into a sea or a big river. It was too real. I wanna move back to my home town and everone I know thinks its a horrible idea and Id hinder myself from going anywhere in life. I think it has something to do with that. What to do?

  • dare // Jul 2, 2012 at 9:35 am

I always have this same dream where there is a bridge that’s impossible to climb because it’s so steep. But for some reason I try to walk up it. In my dream I met this group of kids & I had to hold on to one of them to get up the top of this steep hill. Then my dream always seems to end there. What does this dream mean? This dream has been recurring for so long.

  • Andrew // Jul 2, 2012 at 9:18 am

I have recurring dreams in which I am riding in a vehicle and approaching the bridge I begin to feel sacred. Like the bridge is very tall and somehow the incline will force the car or truck to tip over backwards. I’m always holding on for dear life. I don’t know what this means but I always get scared as hell when I cross bridges now. Any interpretation will help.

  • Christina D // Apr 25, 2012 at 9:27 am

I was about to cross over a huge bridge that went over the ocean. I was able to see where it started but couldn’t see where it ended. I remember starting to drive over it and skipped to me on a canoe finishing on the other side. Not sure what this means but It’s not the first dream I have driving over the ocean on a bridge.

  • kim // Jan 16, 2012 at 8:42 am

I dreamed it was snowing and I went over a familiar bridge to get something from the other side (happened to be liquor :p) and it started to snow. It was pretty covered on the way back and I was driving in my Dad’s truck. I hit a dip or a bump on the bridge and the bridge broke. I got to the other side but everyone else who wanted to cross basically couldn’t. There was one guy who figured out how to do it and he made it across. What does this dream mean?

  • Meredith // Jan 8, 2012 at 9:13 pm

I have these repetetive dreams…..I’m in a car, always the passenger, and we always come to a bridge that’s submerged in water. I’m always afraid to go across, knowing we won’t make it, but in every circumstance, the driver attempts to cross anyway. HOWEVER…the dreams always end there. I don’t know if I make it across or not…..
The only time this dream was a little different from the others, was one where I was a passenger, and we were driving on mountain roads (my brother was driving, in others, it’s my mom), and it was stormy, and I knew we were driving to a bridge….and in the dream, I remembered my other dreams, and started screaming for him to turn around, because I knew what was ahead. This dream ended before I got to the bridge.

We are on a trip and I am riding an elephant into the jungle along with many other tourists. I am given the largest of the elephants to ride and as we take off, this elephant I’m on walks under two bridges (no water just walking on a path under them) and he is so tall I think I’ll be knocked off from hitting the bottom of the bridge so I lean all the way back and just barely make it under but not a scrape. I think I might fall off this elephant he is so large but he keeps kind of looking back at me to grab the correct opening in the “harness” he is wearing and once I do I feel more steady and secure.

I am driving down a two lane road in this dream. I am about to come up on Castle Bridge and know I have a fear of them. Before the bridge there is a very sharp curve so you practically run up on it all of a sudden. My car crosses the bridge but only because of the high rate of speed I was going. I saw that there were many cars in this muddy sea from the land on the other side. There I stood, watching this event in which I saw the cop pull my body from the water, as well as the severed head of a drowned woman. I was a ghost, just watching. And then I awoke.

I was walking across a very long rope bridge, and wrapped in the rope are dead people, some decapitated. Then this guy comes running towards me. I think he was a murderer. I ran back to the side of the bridge I came from. The guy’s name was Malachi and he chased me with a chainsaw and the dream continued as a chase dream.

There’s a big rain storm. Muddy roads and such from all the rain. I see other cars struggling with avoiding the flooding waters over the roads. I’m out with two others but suddenly I realize it’s time to go to work. We find ourselves on a small wooden bridge, in my car. The bridge is made of just two planks (for each wheel) but of course I know I must drive across. The car nearly falls off. The others are standing on the other side watching as I navigate this very narrow bridge. This is a recurring dream.

  • Ahlam // Jun 20, 2011 at 5:42 pm

I dreamed about crossing stiff bridge over water. I think its a wide pond. The water is unclear green. My uncle told me not to cross the bridge because maybe I will fall, but I didn’t heed his advice. Instead I intend cross the bridge by myself.

  • Ahne // May 13, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I dreamt about a bridge. My sister and I were walking and talking but when my head turned back there was NO one behind me and in my dream I thought my sister fell into the river. Then I jumped in the river too. Then I woke up it and realized it was just a dream. In my dream, I dreamt that I was dreaming.

  • DBB // Dec 2, 2010 at 4:24 pm

In this dream I was crossing a bridge in my car and was being really careful not the ran over the dead bodies that were lying on the bridge. I remember swerving and driving slow, trying to to see who were the people that where laying on the bridge.

My lover and I stop the car, get out and stand with our arms around each other under a arched brick bridge – not large and very old, like something that you see in the European countryside but not Australia. We think we see his wife at the top of the bridge to the right trying to spot us but pull back under so she can’t see us. Then there are 3 people watching us. My lover turns his back on them and pretends he can’t see them.

    Driving Backwards.
In my dream I am giving my boyfriend’s sister a ride in a nice car. It was at night I got on the expressway, it started to rain. The express way was packed with cars and I tried to get off but there were too many cars and construction. My boyfriend’s sister took the wheel while sitting on the passenger’s side and started to drive us backwards. As we were driving backwards we passed under a bridge made of ice with cracks in it – it looked as if it were about to break. It was also shaped like a dome. She drove backwards into a parking space and the dream ended.

  • Patrick // Mar 14, 2010 at 10:17 am

I dream that I cross a tall arched bridge by foot. The bridge is very narrow (about 10 feet wide), the climb is 45 degrees, the bridge is about 400 feet high, and swaying a lot. Then when i arrive at the top, I always fall off, the only time I didn’t fall was when I lay flat on my stomach in a star shape. It freaks me out every time. Anyone else have this dream?

  • Discovery Coffin // Oct 4, 2009 at 8:36 am

I am watching a person that’s discovered an ornate coffin. They dug up coffin and a wide area that reveals 3-D sculptural figures that were buried around the coffin. The person is very excited about their discovery and is some how communicating without talking and I know they are telling me there are others buried in what looks like my yard. The idea that this space could be a cemetery scared me and I woke up from this dream. Why did I wake up? Why wasn’t I able to see what else was in the yard?

  • Forest Fire Bridge // Oct 4, 2009 at 8:27 am

On a dark, clear night I am driving my car on an deserted road when I see a forest fire burning ahead …I turn my car around to avoid the fire ..and end up outside my car trying to walk across a foot bridge ..its covered with snow and I’m holding on to a top railing and start walking, half way across I see an icy patch, its very narrow..one slip means going into the icy water below..I stop and can not continue because I’m scared to cross over the ice fearing that I may fall into the icy river below..I am aware I am alone, I don’t want to fall, I know I can not turn around, I feel unable to move. I wake up. My dream felt real..like I was there stranded on the bridge with no one to rescue me. I don’t know my fate..I’d like to know why I woke up..did I make it across the bridge? did I fall? why couldn’t I see the ending?

  • Marnis // Feb 27, 2008 at 2:28 pm

I cross a bridge but a car behind me blows up and crashes into the bridge. The bridge collapsesand I start falling and land in dark water. The water is thick and deep black and I start to drown. I get pulled out by a talking bear who calls me a lucky survivor. I then start swimming easily in the water.
