Dream meaning: Grandparent, Grandmother, Grandfather

Dreaming of grandparents has meaning of heritage, ancient or outdated characteristics or behaviors. Your personal grandfather, or any elder person may symbolize the Wise Old Man archetype, your inner spirit. Interpretation of grandparents in dream points to the message that provides needed insight or wisdom. A grandmother or elder female may represent the Great Mother archetype, the aspect of your female personality. Grandparents often gave us a kind of unrestricted love we usually didn’t get from parents so the appearance of a grandparent may suggest that this is a present need. Or if you receive it in the dream, it may be a reassurance that you are okay.

I had a weird dream, firstly, I saw myself in bed not asleep just chatting with my younger sisters then, I went to my parents room, they were asleep. I returned back to continue chatting with my sisters. One of them already I did not see for a year she is married and lives in another country and has two kids. Then out of no where I saw my grandma (passed away 5 yrs ago) accompanied with my aunt (still alive) dressed in black and with black veils that they exposed when they met my dad who was astonished to see them! They said nothing! Then after that I was talking with my sister about a big box that is for her kids like a bed but it is in carton which I suggested to make a tent on it for the kids but that was all just chatting. Then we all went to some crowdy place where we saw nothing but crowds of strangers! And I can feel my family is there but can’t see them, until I met my dad again and we left to our car where everyone was in, I woke up before even I know if I will jump in or not 🙂

I had a dream of my grandmother who passed away when I was 6. I’m now 20 years old & I don’t remember much of her. There’s been a lot going on in my life lately & there’s been a lot of stress.
When I saw her in my dream…at first I hugged her & she didn’t say a word, but then I realized “oh she’s supposed to be dead”, but I was the only one who knew that…it was a family gathering of some sort. Please someone explain this…it’s really bothering me..

My grandpa had passed away 13 years ago when I had this dream. He suffered immensely in the years leading up to his death, therefore, it was bittersweet for the family. My dad and my grandpa were extremely close, I mean talk, see each other everyday close. I, since I was a little girl, felt this bond with him. Given his fragile exterior it was hard to show love sometimes, all of us nietos we’re scared to hurt him. I remember lots of lackluster hugs that were given with lots of love but with inability to fully embrace him.
I was going through a very difficult break up, and this manifested into a depression of sorts. Although I was excelling in my studies and career goals, emotionally I was a wreck. My parents and my close friends really didn’t understand because they were all just happy I had “seen the light.” I would cry myself to sleep consistently, and no one but God knew. I would pray for my ex every night, and I prayed for the courage and will to get over all this. One of these nights, I had a dream. A white/bluish background, my grandpa was just immediately in front of me, healthy; in his hat, with eyesight, a full healthy face, and a huge smile on his face. You know when a kid skids his knee or falls and mom comes and comforts him/her? That “oh poor thing, come here” face and mannerism? Well, that’s what I felt in my grandpa, no words exchanged, just his open arms. He hugged me and I felt him physically, felt his embrace, it felt never ending and as if he was larger than normal. I felt such peace and tranquility. When I woke up, I actually sat up and the room felt still and peaceful, I began to weep. I wanted to feel that again. I’m sitting here on the anniversary of his death and two years since the dream and I still remember the feeling and what he gave to me in that dream. I always wanted to see him healthy, embrace him, and have him see me as an adult. He gave me much more than that, he came to me and let me be a big ol baby and he knew, that’s what I needed. I thank God for allowing him to visit me in my dream. I know he is praising God everyday, in his kingdom, something he absolutely lived for. I was reminded of how he lived his last days, always praising God with faith and hope. That is what I am left with today.

My grandfather passed away two weeks ago at the age of 83. I love him so much and we always had a close connection between us. In my dream I was walking across a bridge over the sky. Some of my friends were on the bridge and my family was walking behind me. I was laughing with my friend and then she moved out of the way. Grandpa appears in front of her. He is sick and he gets stuck between the wooden bars. I tell him “it’s okay I will help you”. I magically pick him up and turn him around back on his feet. I help him walk across the bridge and we come to a small room with a leather seat. I lift him up and lay him down in the seat as my dad and me stand over him. My dad says “it will be okay” and I say the same. My grandpa stares at us. He did not say a word the whole time. I woke up believing that he had visited me through my dream. I think he was trying to tell me that I’ve helped him through his suffering and that I helped him cross the bridge to heaven. He is showing me that he is okay now. It was a magical experience.

I’m currently going trough financial and work difficulties. I dreamt about my late great grandmother who passed on in 2004. I was crying and she opened her arms to me and said everything will be ok. What does this mean?

I had a dream that I was getting ready in my mirror, & my sister would walk by behind me but in the mirror I would see my grandma who passed instead of my sisters reflection. It happened multiple times in my dream. My grandma is full Japanese, but spoke perfect English. She tried to mouth something to me but it was in Japanese. What does this mean?

I had another dream after the one below. my Grandfather always had this tin container with him. little things he didn’t want to loose he would place in it. in my dream my uncle called me to ask if I knew where he kept it. so I drove over to my grandfathers house to help my uncle look for it.
We couldn’t find it but then I remembered it was in the truck he drove. I look in the truck, its not inside. my uncle asks if I could go buy one similar. I say ok and drive my grandpas Datsun to the local hardware store. I get there and head straight to where I know they have these tin cans. As I search for tin can amongst hundreds, an arm reached over my shoulder and grabbed one that was similar to what I wanted. The man who reached over me was my deceased grandfather. He hands me the can. I was stunned. I don’t know what to say. he walks with me as if he came to the store with me. I buy it at checkout and we walk out the door. I ask him outside, “Grandpa you know you died on.” he finishes my sentence with the day he died and a baseball fact that also occurred on the day he died (He liked baseball). I ask him if he would like to come home with me to see all the family again and he says sure sounds like fun. I go to give him a hug and as im hugging him the weirdest thing happened. my grandfather turned into a toddler the size of my son. Now I have a little toddler with me and im trying to figure out how im going to get him home. I have no car seat for him. to small to ride in seat by himself. as im trying to figureout what to do. I awake with a whole slew of emotions. Id like to think my grandfather was acknowledging my son as he never met him but I was not sure. another amazing dream I will never forget.

  • Daniel // Jul 3, 2014 at 7:40 am

My Grandfather passed a couple of years ago and I had a dream about being at his home with all the family gathered there. I was in the backyard with my cousin and his son where we all use to congregate and talk…we decide to go inside. as I walk through the screen door and close it behind me I walk past the kitchen to see standing right in front of me my grandfather. I say “Grandpa? Ive missed you.” he doesn’t say a word but opens his arms as to offer an embrace with a grin on his face. I walk up to him and give him a hug. the most emotional awakening ive ever experience. Didn’t understand it, but it one sure was special one that I will always remember.

I had a dream that my grandfather (passed 6 years ago) and I were in a cafe and his face looked really stuff, like I couldn’t make an expression. I kept asking him questions and calling out to him but he wouldn’t speak. It upset me. I always have dreams where we are both in the cafe catching up on life, his and heaven and mine on earth. Wonder why this one was different.

  • Hannah // Jun 19, 2014 at 7:16 am

I can’t find any explanation for my dream i had last night. Some people called me and told my family to all come to my house so we could talk. On the phone they said they were going to kill my great grandparents (who died 5 years ago) and to hide somewhere because they were going to kill us next. The really creepy thing is i went to my great grandparents house and they were sitting at the dining table with sacks over their head around one candle and were praying, but weren’t talking. Someone else was chanting some ritual and i ran home and we went to this park where several men in black shot everyone in my family down but me. A few others survived but they pledged allegiance to the group that tried to kill us. I then went on a train and decided to commit suicide and jumped off the train, and then i woke up. What does this mean?

  • Iturea // Apr 21, 2014 at 7:38 pm

I had a dream about my grandmother and we were in the house and another image of her came walking in the house with arm extended out. She had something on her hand that looked like mud or something but she was trying to touch my grandmother’s face. It scared me and I woke up.

  • Christal // Mar 24, 2014 at 11:02 am

My grandmother who I was very close to died 35 years ago. I just awoke from a dream crying. In my dream I was called over to a relatives house so she could notify me that my grandmother had really just died, she was being kept alive all this time. I was asked to sort through some of her stuff along with my youngest cousin to see if I wanted any of her personal effects. I was so upset finding out this and missing out on the time that I would have just spent sitting with her.

  • Andrea // Jun 10, 2013 at 11:33 pm

I dreamed that my family and I were in my grandmother’s living room. All of the sudden, my grandfather (deceased for 5 years now as result of alzheimer’s and parkinson’s disease) came in to the house like nothing had happened (he was never sick and he never passed). It was uncanny to me that his face was aged from my last memory of him. He sat on the floor and my four year old son started playing with him as he used to with us when we were little (keep in mind, he never met my son), he shook my husband’s hand, told him how happy he was that we had found each other, then turned to me. He held both my hands and told me how proud he was of me, then he hugged me tight. I woke up because the feel of his embrace was real. I physically felt my grandfather hug me. I don’t know what this means, but I do miss him very dearly. I hope this isn’t a bad sort of dream, because I desperately wanted to return to sleep to talk to him more. As I continued to have tears streaming down my face, my cries were amplified when I learned that it wouldn’t be that simple.

  • Ortiz // Mar 15, 2013 at 12:11 pm

I had a dream of my grandfather. He passed about about 4mos now. He come into in room where me and my sister were and as i turned to see who walked in the room it was my grandpa. I said to him grandpa and he given me a hug as well as my sister and told me that he was leaving now and if i wanted to see who was awaiting for him. As i walked him out he pointed up at the sky and said look. As I look it was a circle of people one spot was open for him and Jesus was with his arms out and the the Virgin Mary was floating back and forth. What is this dream trying to tell me?

  • Grandma's house // Mar 14, 2013 at 6:02 am

I used to have a lot of dreams where very normal routine things were taking place, like getting ready for work, or eating a meal etc. Nothing special happening. I am always an adult, just going about my daily business. But the location would always be in my grandmother’s old apartment, almost like I lived there. She was never there, I never saw her. She passed away 26 years ago, when I was 12, it was sort of sudden. I didn’t get to see her for a few days before she died, so I never felt like there was closure there. I think this is why I never see her in my dreams. However I do always sense that she is still there somewhere, and alive. After I had my daughter 4 years ago, I noticed that those dreams sort of tapered off. I am wondering if it is because I have found that unrestricted love that I craved from my daughter, previously wanting it from my grandmother.

Dreamed of my grandma late twin sister and I could only see her she was happy and after that I shaved my hair.

  • Gomez // Feb 11, 2013 at 12:46 pm

I had a dream that my grandma, whom I don’t speak to anymore, brought over her husband (my grandpa.) Thing is that he died in a bar shootout when my father was just a baby. I have never dreamed about him ever before and had not thought about him ever, and if it makes a difference my father died 11 years ago. O really want to know what this means, if it means anything.

My grandmother has been ill with cancer for 4 months now, but I had a dream last night that the doctor called and said that she doesn’t have cancer, but yet does have a flesh eating bacterial disease. And 5 minutes after the doctor had called, my grandmother passed away with me sitting right next to her… What does this mean!?

  • lorena // Jan 2, 2013 at 1:01 pm

I had a dream about my grandpa and its odd because he passed away in I think 2002 and I dont think I ever dreamed about him before. All I remember was me seeing him and he was standing in the bathroom by the shower and my mom standing next to him. I said hi grandpa welcome back. My mother said dont say that. I think she was tryna make it seem like he was just on a vacation m came back home. But my grandpa knew he passed away n came back. He didnt look at me, face me or hug me. He was like looking at the floor. I was actually kind of scared. This dream has to mean something bc I dont recall ever dreaming of my grandpa and.plus like I said he passed away about 11 years ago

Dreamed of my dead grandmother. She was dead in my dream and then woke up.
I was freaking out saying I don’t know what to do. My cousin and dad helped her walk and have a seat. She was walking weird.
And she never spoke to me in the dream. She has been dead for years. She has never been in a dream of mine ever!

  • Patricia // Sep 21, 2012 at 2:15 am

Last night I was sick. My grandmother came to me in my dreams. She looked healthy and the same as I remeber her. She was being kind and loving. I awoke from my dream, remebering everything, as if it just happend in life. I am not sure why I have had this dream, but it was wonderful seeing her again.

  • Jennifer // May 31, 2012 at 7:22 am

I just woke up this morning from a dream about my grandparents’ house. They have been deceased since 1995 and 1996. I was really close to them.

    My dream:
My dad and I went to their house to picky up some things that were left behind or never sorted out among the siblings. In my dream, they had given the house to their house keeper, whom we all loved. They had a house keeper not because they were rich – because they weren’t- but because they were elderly and needed help.

She lets us in, and kept the house just like my grandparents did. It was heart warming. She lead us into the dinning room and the items were stuffed in there. All of the sudden I start sobbing in my dream. Gracie, their house keeper, handed me the tiny bee pendant my grandmother promised to me when I was a child. I loved that pin when I was little.

I have had dreams about my grandparents several times but they are usually in them. I haven’t had a dream of them in a while until now but they weren’t there at all, just Gracie. I saged my bedroom last night for the first time in a week before going to sleep. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

My daughter had a dream of her deceased grandmother (whom she never met). She spoke to her in Spanish and my daughter didn’t understand, her grandmother walked into the ocean and disappeared. I walked in and said “she did it again” (suicide) and my daughter was confused saying it was not suicide she died of cancer. Then woke up.

I have this dream every year right before Christmas. My uncle passed away last year. In my dream there are about 15 guys on motorcycles chasing me and they chase me from Bedford, IN to my hometown. Someone that I’m riding with drops me off at the post office. I run about two blocks to my grandparents’ house where they are still chasing me. I run in and call the police. One man finds his way inside the house. My grandmother screams and he shoots her and my grandfather in the head. Then the men hear the police coming and they all run. I don’t understand why I’m having this dream.

I had a dream last night of my deceased grand father who passed away in 1994 of bone cancer.. I had a dream he was sitting at my table by my bay window which is where I always sit at dinner. He was moving in with me so I could take care of him and we had a conversation like he was here today. He looked the same as he did b4 he got ill.

  • roberto // May 28, 2011 at 2:06 pm

I had a dream of my passed-away grandmother. In the dream she was at my house for a visit. She walked in with my aunt who still lives and gave me the biggest hug. She had an orange cat with her, just like I used to have and she was talking to my wife, but I couldn’t hear what it was about. Then she got up and went to the restroom. I was in my room with 2 black and white cats and then I woke up.

  • Angie // Apr 7, 2011 at 11:26 pm

My grandmother passed away 1 yr ago due to pancreatic cancer. She lived less then 3 wks after becoming very ill and being diagnosed. We were very close and had a strong bond. My grandmother had 3 living children. My mother, aunt, and uncle. My father was killed by a hit and run driver. His murder has never been solved. I was 4 yrs old and no longer remember him. With my mother unable to cope with his death my grandparents took over care and legally adopted me.
Prior to my grandmothers death I would have dreams of the world “ending”. I was trying to reach her and my surroundings looked so similar to the tsunami aftermath. My second recurrent dream prior to her death I could feel an approaching danger. I would carry her to safety with no difficulty. Always trying to get out of the house and up to the attic. I felt a need to get to the attic for higher ground for safety. Since her death she sometimes comes to me in my dreams. My grandfather as well, he passed away 11 yrs ago. The first time they came to me as young adults healthy with no aliments. I now see (in my dream) my grandparents always in their home happy and healthy. They are doing daily activities as if they were alive. I am the only person who has seen them in my dreams. I feel they come to me to let me know they’re okay and waiting for me.

  • Alexandra // Dec 7, 2010 at 9:12 pm

I dreamed that my Great Grandmother came to help me with something from out of town and I wasn’t there. Mind you she has been dead for over 17 years, which was just before my daughter was born. The night I finally got there she passed away peacefully in my sisters old bed. My mother and grandmother was there as well. I was never close to my great grandmother but I never hated her either. She was a funny, but quirky woman. Loved taking care of children but mentally did weird stuff. Like serve me frosted flakes in the morning and then put like 3 or 4 spoons of sugar. It was 1 year when I was 9 when she took care of me and my sisters a lot.

  • Alishia // Nov 14, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Hello, my name is Alishia. I have a recurring dream of an elderly Native American woman. In my dream I know her, she is family to me. I know that my great great great grandmothers were Cherokee, on both my paternal grandfather, and paternal grandmother’s sides. I have never seen their photos, but for whatever reason I know her as family. She just has that feel to her.

Anyway in the dream I am laying down and my “grandmother” is kneeling next to me. We are both inside a circle. The circle is made of friendship bracelets of many colors. It’s like a rainbow and is very beautiful and comforting to me. This dream has happened a couple of times during periods when I was very depressed or stressed out.

In my dream my “grandmother” is chanting, and appears to be meditating. She takes my hand, and holds it in both of hers while she appears to be concentrating, and chanting. There is also fire, and smoke or incense in the dream. It is a very comforting experience. In fact I’d like to have it again.

I have thanked her and called out to her. I don’t know what else to do. It just felt like the right thing to do. I wish I understood this better.
