The womb; the unconscious;primal yearnings/urges (especially dark waters), hence the instincts; undeveloped potentiality out of which light (consciousness) arises; creativity; the cosmic nothingness out of which creation arose.
It can symbolize a stage of ignorane/unknwoing, psychologically blind (in the dark) or hope (it’s always dark before dawn). Perhaps there is some issue to which you are not attending.
Mythologically, darkness often symbolizes the underworld or death and is related to rebirth and to Persephone and her experiences. Dark locations or areas and black spots can symbolize death. If you are in dark tunnel but can see light, it may symbolize an acutal birth memory, impending death, or simply that there is a way out of a current situation.

I had a hysterectomy last June, and from then I’ve had a frighting dream about 10 times. I dream that someone is in my bedroom in the dark and I wake up sweating and scared.p>

I dreamed that a golden figure like a lion was flying with incredible speed. It looked half solid and half air molecules. It opened its mouth and it took all the gold/light into itself. It became very dark around, everything was black, different shades of black, everything became sand and it was moving downward. Then it became fluid and looked like oil. Then I saw footsteps walking through it, but it seemed to be water on top, and solid on the bottom - invisible people walking through it and the water moved with the footsteps.

I dreamed it was night and I was on a pond full of dark water and cocodiles were under the water. My dad had disappeared under the water and I got a call saying my boyfriend had gotten locked up forever. Any suggestions on what this means?

My boyfriend told me he had a dream of him walking in a tunnel as his friends were holding me back and I was screaming and yelling for him. In reality what is going on is that he is locked up right now, hopefully there is a way out of it. He had this dream while being locked up. Those friends want him dead. I guess this dream means that too.
