Dream meaning: Fish/Fishing

FishFor Jung, fish were symbols of some content from the unconscious, emotions, or life energy that is been stirring around in the unconscious from the beginning of our life. Therefore, fishing represents the search for, or process of becoming aware of, material from the unconscious. In this way fish can also symbolize the Self, or the inner Christ.
If the above does not seem to fit, consider a situation in which you or another have been acting like a cold fish or big fish in a little pond. You or another may have been fishing for compliments or other information; or behaving like a fish out of water. Is there something fishy about some situation; or is someone more of a queer fish than you have realized?

Perhaps it is time to get a little rest and hang up a gone fishing sign in your window. If you are fishing, it can symbolize a wish to relieve present stress; a need to get away and ponder some situation; delving into the waters of the unconscious for insight and wisdom. Eating fish would be incorporating new realizations or spiritual feelings or knowledge. If you are in the water, being eaten or swallowed by a large fish, this is the archetypal theme of night sea journey.

Fish may suggest you need to look to earlier situations for guidance in a present situation. Twin or double fishes can represent the astrological sign for Pisces, possibly someone born under that sign. Tiny fish in a bowl or container may represent sperm, a wish for sex or pregnancy. In many cultures, fish represent fertility and the preservation of life.

I dreamed i was in fishing farm with farmer. Then some people join. The farm turned to be a big lake. Suddenly we were trapped in the middle of the lake, ie a platform with rail protected from failing down into water. The fishes became more and bigger then gigantic. They were going to attach us. We were all panicked and find ways to escape. It seemed so long. Finally i found a way and lead them to escape and we finally safe. What does it mean?

In my dream I was with my uncle. He was the 1 who grabbed the big fish in dirty water. Then he threw it near me.

I usually dread the sight of fish, but last night, I had a brief glimpse of an algae eater in my dream. I was a a cafeteria-styled restaurant with someone when I looked over and caught the fish in a normal sized tank staring at me. No swimming, no movement; just staring. In reality, I usually avoid looking at such creatures because I feel their
features are disturbing, but this was different. I couldn’t look away from the fish.

I dreamed last monday night that I had to clean out the water in an aquarium. I didn’t see any fish but know they were there. I do not in real life have any fish in an aquarium.

A lot of people commenting here have said they’ve had the dream since they were young…I’m 14, and I’ve been having this dream repeatedly. It’s kind of freaking me out because I don’t usually remember my dreams, but this one stays with me throughout the day.
I’m always in a familiar place, and with someone I love. Sometimes I know the person in real life and sometimes I don’t, nevertheless, I’m always in love with them in the dream. They disappear quickly, and the majority of the dream happens when a room with fish tanks appears in the lover’s place.
The number of fish tanks varies. Sometimes there are other fish. The others are usually dead, or dying. But the one I pay most attention to looks like a much, much larger version of a fish I currently own.
He’s in a tank, and the water is filled to the top. He jumps out, near me, falls on the ground and dies. I’m always very upset, and concerned about my fish, and I think it’s my fault it died- but I never try to save it, like some of you have said, by picking it up or such. I seem to know my efforts will be futile, and give up on it.
Any ideas on what it could mean? It would be really helpful- I’ve been having this dream for a long time now.

I saw a dream of many fish in a fishing pool. The fish were swimming in a deep pool, but there was no water in the pool. There was one black man looking after them who sat on the chair in the pool on one side with a table. When I entered the pool one fish attacked me and started eating the flesh from my leg. Then I told the person, but he ignored me. Then I went to another corner of the pool. There, some more fish attacked me. Then I ran out of the corner but one more fish attacked my back. In the dream it’ felt very painful.

I rarely remember my dreams. When I do its because it is one that really stands out. Last night I had a dream that I was in a very rural area. There was knee high tall, brown grass. The grass was very sparse not dense. The grass on the ground was bright green and the earth was soft enough that your foot would sink very slightly when you took a step. As me and a friend (unknown) were walking we came across giant, almost dinosuar like catfish (probably around 100 lbs, like the size of great dane laying down). They were resting in what was no more than a foot of water. When I would come across one I would be slightly startled but then the fish would begin to scurry and try to swim away. There must have been about 15 in total. Oddly enough a couple of them were deceased. The person I was with didn’t find it odd at all. It was treated as a regular occurance for them. Any ideas? Suggestions?

I was walking with my dog on the beach and saw a fishing rod. I got hold of the fishing rod and tried to catch a fish. The fish ate the bait but while I was trying to reel it in the fish got away. What does this dream mean, I wonder?

I had a dream where I was at a pool party and I was chilling in the jacuzzi a lil way out secluded from the main pool. An unidentified male came to join me, he looked innocent enuff. As he came in, I greeted him and he coldly ignored me, and sat down with his back to me. I immediately got uncomfortable and as I started to stand up to leave, he pounced on me to attack me. Splashes of water were flying out everywhere and I managed to break free, and I ran to the security guard who was monitoring the hotel pool party to report what had happened. As I went back to the scene, the predator male in the pool became a fish out of water… Then I woke up.

  • emma // Aug 17, 2011 at 11:48 am

I dreamt of a drop of water on floor which was getting bigger and bigger, and a fish in it which also was getting bigger. And then it tried to eat me but didn’t. I escaped… I dreamed the same thing like 3 times in one night but although the fish wanted to eat me, it didn’t - I managed to escape every time.

Christina, Becky, Exact same recurring dream, I’m 37. Did anybody find out what it means? I used to have the jumping out of tanks dream when I was younger, but now it’s a room filled with dirty black fish tanks. The fish are just shadows, but there’s lots of them, all different shapes and sizes. I am in disbelief as to how they survived for so long and feel like they are mine, or my resposibility and I’ve forgotten about them. Do you think it’s a reflection of our children and a fear of letting them down?

  • nida // Jul 23, 2011 at 10:21 pm

I was at the seashore and I saw the fishermen catch many big fish in their nets.

  • Ristina // Jun 22, 2011 at 12:31 am

Last night I dreamed of seeing two very cute round and fat goldfishes. They looked like balls! I had to move them to a big fish tank to join the other fishes. I looked at the huge fish tanks. There were also fishes with shapes round and fat. They looked cute but some of them looked aggressive. I was thinking of using two separate bowls with water to take the goldfishes to the fish tank or using a washing machine to take them. Finally, I chose the bowls. The bowls looked a bit dirty. I had to wash them before using them. Then, several fishes from the big fish tank came out and swam towards me and one of them almost got inside my mouth. Then, I woke up in the middle of the night remembering this dream.

I walk in from the ocean standing on water, i walk across coral barefoot, not getting hurt at all and come across many beautifully coloured fish in small pools in the rocks. Carefully I take them out and put them back into the ocean then walk back into the sunset still walking on the water.

  • Ivy // Feb 27, 2011 at 9:27 pm

I dreamt of two big colorful fish that came out while the sea water had risen far enough to reach someone else’s house. While I was talking to a friend, the man who owns the house tried to catch the fish with bait. He caught a fish, smiled, and walked away. Well..I just don’t know what it means.

I dreamt of catching a fish and on the boat I sliced open the fish to get it ready for cooking…and then my dream ended or I forgot what happened next.

  • sonya // Feb 18, 2011 at 8:04 am

I was on a boat with my grandmother who passed away almost 20 years ago. My koi (the ones I really do have at home) were swimming around the boat. Their colors were so bright and the white on them was so clean. There were these black worms in the water and the koi were trying to eat them to save me so I didn’t get bit, as I somehow ended up sinking into the water and my grandmother was yelling, “Don’t let them bite you!” Any suggestions on meaning to any of this?
    thanx

I keep having a similar dream as Christina, I have many dirty fish tanks, for some reason I feel the need to change the fish around in their fish tanks. But I don’t understand why or how the fish tanks got so dirty. I have had this ongoing dream for about two years now. What does it mean?

  • Sam // Sep 13, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Hey, I had a odd dream last night. I was at a pond where there was lots of my ex’s. And I kept trying to catch fish, but every time I caught a fish I threw it into the pile as it was another ex-girlfriend. But then I pulled a fish out who was God, who spoke to me about my life. And since I have woke up I have had some sort of peace with myself. I wonder if it’s normal to dream about god?

  • Becky // Sep 13, 2010 at 6:47 am

Christina~ I have that EXACT same dream. Also recurring. I am 27.

  • Johnny // Aug 9, 2010 at 6:52 am

I dreamt of many discus fishes jumping out from the aquarium. All of them were blue and orange ones. However, I managed to catch the only orange ones and get them back into the tank and ignored the rest. The rest are blue coloured.

  • Cristina // Jul 4, 2010 at 11:39 am

This is a recurrent dream I’ve had since I was very young. I’m 55 now. I dream of fish in big fish tanks in dirty water. Some look aggressive and others don’t. I realize in the dream they belonged to me and that I had forgotten about them, abandoned them and wondered how they had kept alive in that situation without food. I may have had this dream about 20 times.

  • jess // Jun 12, 2010 at 4:27 am

I would like to know what dreaming of an evil or ominous large violent fish means. I dreamt of a very large fish (not a shark) violently eating a man in shallow waters on a beach on a sunny autumn day. It was thrashing around and very violent and devoured the man completely. Then last night I dreamt of a dark pool and I was looking down from a platform in a house when all of a sudden a huge dark threatening black fish (more the size of a killer whale this time) motored into sight and I felt in danger. Then it swam beneath the house and disappeared. I still felt in danger. Would love to know if anyone else has dreamt of large evil violent fishes and what this could mean! lol bit strange I know.

I dreamed I was at a family gathering in the house that I grew up in and we were about to fry fish. There were two large fish on the plate along with raw steak ready to be fried. but we never placed in the grease for some strange reason. Then my cousin remodeled the upper flat of our family home.

I dreamed of drowning a fish in a bag. I always thought it was impossible to drown a fish in water. But from this dream I realized that if you put it in a small zip-lock bag, the action becomes possible.

To see a dead fish, signifies disappointment and loss of power/wealth.

Dreaming of dead fish is an omen of disappointment.

  • Jessie // Apr 3, 2009 at 10:20 am

I wish I could figure out this part of my dream. My b/f and I, whom have been having problems and are expecting our first child, jumped into this this lake filled with dead fish and I don’t mean a few dead fish, A LOT of dead fish…

  • Sonja // Mar 29, 2009 at 9:34 am

I had the exact same dream just last night, Abita.

Except, it was MY fish. I have a medium sized fish tank with three fish… and the bigger of all of them kept jumping out and i had to repetitively place him back in.

  • Abita // Sep 21, 2008 at 6:02 am

My dream consisted of me seeing a fish out of water, grabbing the fish with my hands and placing it in a large fish tank. I had to repeat placing the same fish back in the tank about three times.
